Dear Tony
I am emailing in
order to make a request to record footage at your casino for a college
piece. My team and I have discussed this location and decided it was
suitable for the genre and narrative, however we do of course need your
permission to use the area. In the footage there shall be no sight of
the company’s logo or name.
Our team are all 16
years of age (as of sending this E-mail) but the actors we shall be
using will all be over the age of 18 and we shall be under supervision
from Arno van der Kraan.
At this moment in time we cannot give you exact times as to when the Casino shall be required, but it shall be between the 8th and 12th of February and shall of course be during closing times as to not affect the business
We are mature
teenagers, and we shall be using a variety of expensive equipment so we
hope that you shall be able to trust us in using this location
respectively.
Yours sincerely,
Jai Van der Kraan

Hello, I am a student currently studying at UTC Sheffield and we would like to enquire about the use of your building for a day to use as a location for a short film.
This is a non-profit project, so we wouldn’t be using this location to earn money.
We would only need to film for a few hours and can do it earlier on in the day, so that we wouldn’t interrupt your business.
We would be filming between the 8th and the 13th of February, so could use the building on any of these days.
Thanks, Lewis Wright

LO2 - Media Pitch

I think the main thing we need to improve is to make our target audience a lot clearer and figure out the best wa to show how our film appeals to this audience. This will be done in treatment.
We need to figure out ways of dealing with difficult filming locations (e.g. lighting for the casino) and more contigencies for if we encounter any problems, during production.
For the final imporvement we need to get more loaction recce and risk assessment forms.

Health and safety considerations
Having a first aider on set at all times (Lewis Wright)
Making sure other people know where we are. Always having a phone at hand.
Moving lighting by the stands to avoid any burns. Keep flammable materials away from lights to avoid fires.
Weather.
Making sure the equipment is protecfted from any weather damage and
make sure that people are careful when moving around.
Making sure that equipment is not obstruct any person that is nearby, especially when it is dark.
The
time of day at which we are filming taking in to consideration any
obstructions or hazards to the team, the public or equipment.
Making
sure that all equipment is on person and protected at all times so that
we can prevent any theft or damage to the equipment.
Make sure that equipment is protected and on person when travelling
1) Location Recce form
- Scouting locations
- Finding suitable areas for filming
2) Take photos as evidence that you have been to the location
- To show that we have been to the locations
- To get some evidence that it is suitable for filming and to remember what is in that location
3) Risk assessment
- Hazards in the locations for filming
A
recce form and risk assessment are important to have before filming so
that we can see if the locations are suitable for the trailer that we
want to film and get an
understanding of any hazards are in the locations.
A
recce form is a form that a company will use to scout a location to see
if it is suitable for filming. They assess things like noise, lighting,
permissions needed for filming etc.
You
should take photographs of the locations so that in future you can
compare them to the other locations. The photographs will allow you to
easily compare the two locations as they will help you to remember what
each location looks like.
A
risk assessment is a document filled in for each location that outlines
any risks to the public, crew or equipment that are present at the
different locations. The risk assessment will also state how you will
prevent these risks from occurring.
- Travel.
- Actor sourcing.
- Weather - protecting electrical equipment, trip hazards.
- Making sure lighting is not near any flammable materials.
- Location Recce Form needs to be complete before filming in that area (needs photo evidence that location has been visited) to see whether or not the area is appropriate to film in.
- Risk assessments of different locations to figure out if any necessary equipment will be needed to counter any hazard.
Legal, Ethical, Scheduling and Certification
If it is right or wrong in the eyes of the law
If it is against somebody's beliefs (religion), age, gender etc.
Looking
at the BBFC guidlines for a 15 rated film there are three main
guidlines that we will have to adhere to when making our product. The
first one will be the guidline on drugs. We will briefly show some use
of drugs during our trailer as it is one of the themes of our film. Our
trailer will not promote or encourage the use of recreational drugs and
the drugs will not be shown for a long period of time. Furthermore the
drugs that will be shown will not be easily obtainable for people in
order to adhere to the guildines on showing the misuse of common
substances. The second guildine that we will have to adhere to is
language. We will adhere to this guidline by making sure that there is
no use of very strong language. We will use some strong language but
this will be farily infrequent as the trailer will not be that long.
During our trailer there may be some imitable behaviour because of the
'fall from grace' theme of our trailer. If any imitable behavious is
shown it will not focus on anything that could be copied. There may be
some sexual content however, to adhere to the guidlines, there will be
no strong detail on the content. There will be some threat in the
trailer, but there will be no sadistic or sexual threat shown in the
trailer to make sure that it adheres to the BBFC guidlines. The final
guideline that we will have to adhere to is the violence guidline. We
will adhere to this by not focusing on the infliction of pain and most
of the images will not be that gory. There will be no depiction of
sexual violence in the trailer.
It
is important to follow these regulations and guildines as if we didn't
out content may be edited or censored and may not be shown in certain
areas.
Watershed
is the time of day before which sexual content, explicit violence and
extreme profanities can not be shown. This is so that the younger
children, for which this content would be unsuitable, will not be
watching when it is broadcast. Based on the age certificate of our film
trailer it would only be shown after the watershed as there will be
content throughout the trailer that may be unsuitable to a yonger
audience.
If
we use any copyrighted music we will have to contact the producer of
the music in order to get permission to use it. However this should not
be a problem as they should allow us to use their music as we are not
using it to make a profit.
To
adhere to the Copyright Design and patents Act of 1988 we will have to
get permission from anybody that is in the trailer. To do this we will
get them to fill in a release and consent form.
LO2 - Mind map of ideas
The mind map ideas for the film trailer we have many ideas so we can make the trailer and get a brief description of what the trailer will be all about We have made this mind map so then we can figure out location and props and gestures. The ideas we have in this mind map have gave us genre we would like our trailer to be.

LO1 - Analysis of a film trailer - Locke
Locke (Steven Knight)
A). The purpose for this video is to advertise and promote the film Locke
B). This trailer is presented in a non-linear format using clips from the film.
C/D). This trailer doesn't show off much from the films. the majority of shots are close up's of the Character Ivan Locke's face, this is showing how the film is centred entirely around him and how we will be seeing the story from his perspective, it also lets the audience know that this is a film with a strong focus on acting rather than direction, the casting of Tom Hardy gives the film a bankable name and will draw in a wider audience. The way that Tom Hardy is dressed is very stereotypical of a British father, this denotes to the audience that he is a family man which also connotes that the dramas in the film might be based very strongly around the themes of family because of how the trailer focuses on it. The lighting in this trailer come from the street lamps and other cars on the motor way, this gives 2 different effects: it ground the film in reality by using such a recognisable sense of light which most people will have encountered before, however it also gives the film an avantgarde style with the lights rolling around the characters face giving a unique sense of style and cinematography. The low key lighting also helps to show off the tone of the film, with the dulled and less flashy colour palette and art style, letting the audience know that this film is a slow burn and won't be full of action and violence. The text that appears in the trailer doesn't offer any exposition but instead is praise for the film from various sources. this is used to sell the film and help give people a positive opinion of it. The music in the background of the trailer in constantly raising in volume and tempo, building up tension and letting the audience know that this film is a drama and doesn't want to be boring. The editing in the trailer starts off less harsh, by using fades it makes the trailer feel like a leisurely drive at night, with the fades also giving the audience the feeling of passing under streetlights and in and out of the dark. however as the tension builds up and the trailer starts to show more of the drama in the film, there begins to be more cuts and the editing starts to feel less smooth, this makes the audience feel more on edge and the situation of the protagonist feel less comfortable. The use of close shots throughout the trailer show, make the audience feel almost uncomfortably close to the character played by Tom Hardy, almost as though they too are affected by the problems of the film.
E). This trailer could not be conventional for a genre, because of how it only has loose attachments to some genres and is mostly a completely unique film, and is unconventional for the trailers for those genres
F). The film was rated a 15 by the BBFC and the trailer was made available to all ages, which allowed for a wider distribution across different platforms. The film will be aimed more towards a male audience because of the strong focus on the male lead and the implications of violence made by the trailer. Since it would have been showed at the cinema it will aimed at people in the A/B social grade because they will have more spending power to afford to be able to go out.

LO1 - Analysis of a film trailer - Submarine
Submarine (Richard Ayoade)
A). This purpose for this trailer is to advertise the film Submarine
B). The form of this this Audiovisual Promo is a film trailer, and is presented in a non-linear format, which is conventional for film trailers.
C/D). Throughout the trailer are constant use of props and costumes to convey the location and period of time in which the film is set. The use of Alex Turners vocals on the soundtrack helps to make the film feel distinctly British with his accent being one of his most distinguishing features in his music, the fact that the music is acoustic indie also sets up the tone for the film and lets people know that this won't be a film for mass audiences. the look of the protagonist is also very similar to the look of Alex Turner, by the style of his hair and the black jacket that he wears at many points throughout the trailer, which connotes how the style of the film was based on the style of videos that the Arctic Monkeys had previously made, especially seeing as the director (Richard Ayoade) had previously directed the filming of 2 live events for the band. The music at the beginning of the trailer also helps to set the period as it uses the style of electronic/synthesiser music found commonly in films during that time period. All the text that appears in the trailer looks like the font that would be produced by a typewriter, there is also the sound effect of the keys of a typewriter being pressed. This along with narration conveys how the story in being told from the perspective of Oliver Tate, it also helps to remind the audience that it is an adaptation of a popular novel, there are also shots which look like they were intended to represent home footage the characters have filmed themselves. This makes it seem like the film is something Oliver has created as a way if telling the story of his own life it also connotes the strong sense of setting by using super 8 cameras to show how the film is set in the 80s. There is a large use of tracking shots where the camera is moving, this shows the how Oliver's life is constantly moving and it is difficult for him to focus on the important things. The film uses the camera flashes at 0:52 for editing as it cuts to various shots of the scene and some of the images produced by the camera, this is to show that the film is more different and quirky as a conventional film would have just shown the characters kissing on screen.
E). Some elements of this trailer are very conventional for teen dramas, this includes the use of humour and the music that comes on later in the trailer. The use of a narrator is also common in teen dramas as it gives the film a particular voice. However the unique style of cinematography and the minimalist music used earlier on in the trailer, this makes the film seem far more like it was designed for arthouse which isn't the usual style of audience that teen films target
F). The film has an age certificate of 15, certified by the BBFC however the trailer is Greenband which means that is appropriate for any aged audience. The film is aimed at both male and female audiences because of the style of comedy and how it is at its core a love story. Since it would have been showed at the cinema it will aimed at people in the A/B social grade because they will have more spending power to afford to be able to go out.

The trailer uses lots of weapons and big vehicles as props and all of the costumes are appropriate for the era and show how violent the situation is, with the main character (and many supporting characters) wearing soldier's uniforms to help convey the two different sides of the conflict. the setting however is quite different with the film being mostly set in in an urban part of Ireland, this separates it from other films and allows for different kinds of sequences to be made. The style of the clothes being worn lets the audience know that this is a period piece and helps remind the audience that this was inspired by real events that happened in many people's lifetime. And the shots of such big crowds shows how the soldiers were really unwelcome there, making the plight of the protagonist seem even more desperate and dangerous. The lighting is lowkey all the way throughout the trailer connoting the tone of the film and the bleakness of the situation. The music also builds up and becomes more intense and faster pace throughout the trailer, this helps create an escalating sense of tension and action, which makes viewers invested and wanting to see what will happen. The camerawork in the trailer is mostly handheld as the shaky effect gives the film a gritty effect and conveys the chaos and violence in the narrative. A lot of shots of the protagonist are long shots with him being stood by himself, this connotes how the character is alone in the city and has no one that can help him. The combination of quick cuts in the editing and the shaky handheld footage makes the film seem more chaotic, fitting the themes of war and making the audience feel as though they are a part of the action, allowing them to more easily empathise with the characters.
E). The trailer is quite conventional for a mature war/action film. It gives glimpses into the characters that will be present in the film without giving away much, focusing more on showing the setting and tone of the fim. The trailer also has text offering bits of exposition throughout the trailer, this is very common in trailers for war films.
F). The film was rated an 18 by the BBFC I think the trailer caters to the more mature audience by showing that it is set in a period of history not so commonly explored in film and teasing the brutality that would be present in the narrative. The Film will be aimed at male audiences due to the strong violence. Since it would have been showed at the cinema it will aimed at people in the A/B social grade because they will have more spending power to afford to be able to go out.

LO1 - Analysis of a film trailer - Dead Man's Shoes
Dead Man's Shoes (Shane Meadows)
A). The purpose of the video is to advertise the film Dead Man's Shoes.
B). The video is in the form of a trailer, meaning that is non-linear.
C/D). From the start of the trailer we get an establishing shot of the Yorkshire countryside, which is somewhere not used commonly in this genre films letting the audience know that this isn't a normal kind of thriller film. Later on in the trailer there are lots of close up shots of the main characters face, this connotes how the film tells a very personal story and how the characters are the main focus of the narrative as opposed to the events. Also the narrator mentions god which lets readers know of the biblical implications of the film such as revenge, murder and family, We also see a shot reverse shot structure between the two brothers which denotes the connection between the two of them whilst also connoting that the films narrative is based strongly around their bond since the trailer focuses so strongly on it. We also see a shot of Richard staring at something, the camera is at a low angle in this shot which makes Richards character seem a lot more powerful and intimidating, this makes him seem different to conventional protagonists in films furthering the idea that this film is an unconventional take on the genre. We also see two flashbacks in the trailer which are shown in black and white, this might be done to show the brutality of what is going on, or how the world has lost all of its colour from the innocent character being abused in such a way, we are assured that these are flashbacks by the editing technique that makes the screen literally flash when transitioning in and out of these sequences. We also see how all the costumes and props in the film seem very normal and common, this fills the film with verisimilitude and makes the situation seem even more extreme. The use of the axe as a prop connotes to the audience that the violence in this film will be very brutal and realistic. The use of the gas mask in the trailer denotes that there will be elements of horror in the film the connotations of this are that this will be a very hard hitting film and that the protagonist will be very different to what we've come to expect from the normal "hero". Richard is also shown with both high and low angle shots, the combination of these 2 types of camera angles convey how the character becomes superior to those around him, through use of violence and fear. However it also lets the audience see that he is vunerable and haunted by some experiences that define his character, this makes him more interesting of a protagonist and makes him seem more relatable to a wider audience.
E). This films unique setting and narrative that spends more time focussing on the villains of the film that the protagonist makes it unconventional for the thriller/revenge genre. Also the biblical element, more antihero-like protagonist and plot twist near the end also make this film seem like more of a thinking mans revenge film and is more likely to keep the film in viewers minds after it finishes than most other thriller/revenge films.
F). The film was rated an 18 by the BBFC I think the trailer caters to the more mature audience by showing the grittiness and brutality of the narrative whilst also teasing the violence and letting the audience know of the moral ambiguity that they will find in the film. The Film will be aimed at male audiences due to the strong violence. Since it would have been showed at the cinema it will aimed at people in the A/B social grade because they will have more spending power to afford to be able to go out.
