LO1 - Analysis of a film trailer - Submarine

Submarine (Richard Ayoade)

A). This purpose for this trailer is to advertise the film Submarine
B). The form of this this Audiovisual Promo is a film trailer, and is presented in a non-linear format, which is conventional for film trailers.
C/D). Throughout the trailer are constant use of props and costumes to convey the location and period of time in which the film is set. The use of Alex Turners vocals on the soundtrack helps to make the film feel distinctly British with his accent being one of his most distinguishing features in his music, the fact that the music is acoustic indie also sets up the tone for the film and lets people know that this won't be a film for mass audiences. the look of the protagonist is also very similar to the look of Alex Turner, by the style of his hair and the black jacket that he wears at many points throughout the trailer, which connotes how the style of the film was based on the style of videos that the Arctic Monkeys had previously made, especially seeing as the director (Richard Ayoade) had previously directed the filming of 2 live events for the band. The music at the beginning of the trailer also helps to set the period as it uses the style of electronic/synthesiser music found commonly in films during that time period.  All the text that appears in the trailer looks like the font that would be produced by a typewriter, there is also the sound effect of the keys of a typewriter being pressed. This along with narration conveys how the story in being told from the perspective of Oliver Tate, it also helps to remind the audience that it is an adaptation of a popular novel, there are also shots which look like they were intended to represent home footage the characters have filmed themselves. This makes it seem like the film is something Oliver has created as a way if telling the story of his own life it also connotes the strong sense of setting by using super 8 cameras to show how the film is set in the 80s. There is a large use of tracking shots where the camera is moving, this shows the how Oliver's life is constantly moving and it is difficult for him to focus on the important things. The film uses the camera flashes at 0:52 for editing as it cuts to various shots of the scene and some of the images produced by the camera, this is to show that the film is more different and quirky as a conventional film would have just shown the characters kissing on screen.

E). Some elements of this trailer are very conventional for teen dramas, this includes the use of humour and the music that comes on later in the trailer. The use of a narrator is also common in teen dramas as it gives the film a particular voice. However the unique style of cinematography and the minimalist music used earlier on in the trailer, this makes the film seem far more like it was designed for arthouse which isn't the usual style of audience that teen films target
F). The film has an age certificate of 15, certified by the BBFC however the trailer is Greenband which means that is appropriate for any aged audience. The film is aimed at both male and female audiences because of the style of comedy and how it is at its core a love story. Since it would have been showed at the cinema it will aimed at people in the A/B social grade because they will have more spending power to afford to be able to go out.
